Things they don't want you to know

Vegans of color not welcome?

Today. January 30th, 2019 I (flower bullock) along, with multiple family and farm volunteers went to our local animal services offices to adopt 'smokey' a male chicken whose been at the center since mid December 2018. we finally had the resources, called a few times beforehand and took the 45 minute drive to our county animal services division (885 Oklahoma ave. san Luis Obispo, ca 93406).
this wouldn't be our first time adopting animals at this shelter, and I'd be remised if I didn't say this wasn't the first time we as a team had experienced explicit racism and discrimination at this office.  it especially wasn't the first time within the animal rights community. we had experienced time and time again, feelings of un-inclusivity amongst our fellow 'activist'.
we've received pushback in our very community from the very people who fight for equal rights, among the most privileged failing to make the connection or even acknowledge the history of  land based oppression  in the united states. after 30 minutes of repeating endlessly that we would not be leaving until  a proper meeting could be set up to discuss our withstanding, the goal being- to ultimately remove us from the 'do not adopt list'.

we started stoner girl farm for reasons exactly like this. it's no secret that mainstream medias idea of veganism is not so inclusive, and tend to breed harmful stereotypes.
how exactly does one determine 'fit-ability' in deciding whether a group of persons or people are fit to house, protect, and hep animals. and how does my skin determine that response.
organizations like dxe (direct action everywhere) and peta, being under fire in recent news for reasons ranging from lack of diversity within the organizations, explicit discrimination and exploiting of black & brown activist, refusing to put poc in positions of power within these structures, and using anti-inclusive rhetoric when attempting to raise awareness on the reality of animal oppression and the clear connection to all oppressed peoples.
stoner girl farm was created because these very organizations who hold claim to 'the liberation of animals,  tend to care less about the oppressive structures within these systems that uphold white supremacy and ultimately ignores the role that poc plays in our everyday life. Vegan or not, 90% of the produce we eat in the us is grown, harvested, and sowed by poc.

The routine comparisons of animal abuse to the enslavement of Black people shows exactly how little value some white members of the vegan community, generally considered a liberal breed, place on Black life. This racism, so casually delivered, is designed to add shock value – to trigger a dietary epiphany.
per our local governments animal welfare  services website states- "a successful outcome to these situations often depends on the ability of responding officers to contact the reporting parties from follow up information and inquiries. " Their mission- to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the domestic animals an people we serve, through public education, enforcement of applicable laws, and the humane care and re-homing of impounded and sheltered animals.
The day we were mistreated and followed home by local law enforcement officers and animal control officers responded reasonably fast, and efficiently, you'll have to stay tuned to find out if they'll uphold the law for all parties, respectively.
If some if the issues here offended, cause distress, or bothered you in some form, lets talk. our goal is to hold safe space, heal, grow, learn, save animals, & create equal opportunities for poc.
